What Is A Diesel Particulate Filter?
A diesel particulate filter, or DPF, sits in the exhaust of most modern diesel vehicles. It traps the soot your engine makes, so that soot does not end up in the air we breathe.
The Australian Design Rules set emission standards for new vehicles, including smoke limits for diesels, according to the Department of Infrastructure. That is why most late model diesel utes, SUVs and vans now leave the factory with a DPF.
Over time, the filter fills with soot. To clear it, the vehicle burns the soot off in a process called regeneration. However, regeneration only works when the exhaust gets hot enough.

The DPF burning process happens in 2 ways:
Passive regeneration:
This happens on its own when you drive at highway speed for a reasonable period.
Active regeneration:
Here the engine computer (ECU) raises the exhaust temperature to burn the soot. It suits vehicles that mostly do short trips around town.
Regeneration burns soot, yet it cannot burn ash. Ash slowly builds up inside the filter over its life. Eventually a DPF can block, crack or melt beyond repair. At that point, DPF replacement becomes the only real fix.
When Do You Need DPF Replacement In Brisbane?
You may need a DPF replacement when:
- the DPF warning light stays on after a regeneration or clean
- an assessment shows the filter is cracked, melted or full of ash
- the vehicle keeps dropping into limp mode
- a previous clean did not bring exhaust back pressure back to normal
- your vehicle manufacturer recommends replacement at a set interval
Common symptoms of a failing DPF include:
- loss of power, especially when towing or climbing hills
- higher fuel use than normal
- black smoke from the exhaust
- DPF warning lights on your dashboard
The Queensland Government says a vehicle that smokes continuously for 10 seconds or more has something wrong that needs fixing as soon as possible. So don’t ignore these signs.
Our DPF Replacement Brisbane Process
At Auto Stop we follow a proven DPF replacement process.
1. Full DPF assessment. First, we road test the vehicle and read live data such as DPF pressures and temperatures. This tells us whether the filter is the real problem.
2. Find the root cause. Next, we check the parts that feed the DPF, such as injectors, sensors, the turbo plus the EGR valve. Fixing these first protects your new filter.
3. Clean or replace. If a clean will restore the filter, we recommend that cheaper option. If the filter is cracked, melted or full of ash, we quote the replacement.
4. Fit and test. Finally, we fit the new DPF, reset the system and take the vehicle for a test drive to confirm it regenerates properly.
